Choosing Between Blinds, Shutters and Curtains

When styling your home, the way in which you dress your windows is a much more important decision than you may think. Blinds, shutters and curtains are responsible for the levels of privacy, lighting and temperature in your home. So which should you choose? In this guide, we’re going to be taking a look at some of the pros and cons of each to help you decide whether blinds, shutters or curtains are most suitable for your home.

Curtains

Curtains are made of fabric and come in a wide variety of different colours, patterns and fabrics, so choosing a style to match your room is incredibly easy. Customers also have the option of choosing the rod and the rings or grommets that hold the curtains up and help them to open and close.

They are usually more suitable for rooms where total light blocking is less important as even blackout curtains struggle to block out all light from the sun or street lamps due to the gap between the window and the curtains themselves.

Pros of Curtains

  • Easy to match to the decor of your room due to the wide range of colours, patterns and fabrics available.
  • Available for a range of different prices making them incredibly affordable for those on a tight budget whilst also having the option of more luxurious curtains for those who don’t mind splashing a little extra cash.
  • Help to trap in heat, keeping rooms warmer during the colder months

Cons of Curtains

  • Can make a room look smaller due to the amount of room they take up.
  • Have only 2 options: opened or closed, reducing the amount of control you have on the heat, lighting and privacy of your home.
  • Can gather lots of dust and pet hairs if not cleaned regularly.
  • Can be susceptible to mold if installed into humid rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Not suitable for all window shapes

Shutters

Plantation shutters are a great addition to any property, offering a number of benefits and are composed of separate panels with shutter louvres that can be individually controlled to allow your desired amount of light. They offer the ultimate in light control, as well as being the most effective window covering for reducing heat loss from the home. Made to measure plantation shutters can be fitted where other window furnishings fail and are thermally dynamic to provide a barrier against the cold in winter and heat in the summer.

Shutters are available in a variety of styles and often come in neutral tones such as white or natural stained wood to keep the room light and bright.

Pros of Shutters

  • Incredibly easy to clean
  • Take up much less space than curtains, helping to keep the room feeling large and open.
  • Have high levels of control over lighting, privacy and heat within the home due to multiple positioning options.
  • Can be fit to any shape any size of window.
  • Long lasting and incredibly stable, engineered to prevent twisting and warping.

Cons of Shutters

  • Can be more expensive than curtains and blinds
  • Slats must be tightened occasionally to ensure they aren’t becoming loose.
  • Shutters are permanently in place. Whilst you can adjust how open or closed the slats are, your windows will always be somewhat obstructed.

At Aspiration Blinds, all of our shutters are manufactured to the highest possible quality, with six coats of paint/stain containing UV inhibitors, engineered styles to prevent twisting and warping, and a 3 year warranty. Check out our range of shutters.

Blinds

Blinds are the most versatile option of the three. They come in a wide range of colours, patterns, textures and styles and suit almost every room in the home. Offering high levels of control over lighting, privacy and heat, whilst also having the option to be open, closed and tilted to different angles, you have the best of both worlds.

There are also a number of style options to suit each room in your home, from Roman, vertical, roller, pleated and Venetian. There is also the option of blackout blinds, helping to create total darkness in rooms such as the bedroom.

Pros of Blinds

  • Come in a wide range of styles and colours.
  • Blackout option.
  • High levels of control over lighting privacy and heat within the home.
  • Available for a range of different prices.

Cons of Blinds

  • Can be noisy when windows are open and they rattle
  • If you do not opt for child safe options, hanging strings can cause a safety hazard for small children
