How to Clean Outdoor Awnings

Fixed Awnings are a timeless solution for protecting your home or commercial property against the elements, they can however become dirty due to their external positioning while keeping you dry or shaded depending on your coverage needs and requirements.

Never fear, at Aspiration Blinds we’re experts in anything shading related and in this article we will inform you on how to keep your trusty awning looking spic and span.

What Is An Awning?

Just in case you aren’t too sure if your property’s shading attachment is or isn’t classed as an awning, this might help:

An awning (or fixed awning) is a fabric cover that is attached to the external wall of a structure and usually extends its coverage over a window or door, not to be confused with a canopy (a freestanding structure).

The bespoke nature of our awning installations mean no matter the dimensions or style of your property, our products will be made to measure, you’ll never have to compromise for your outdoor shading.

We offer options from simple manual mechanisms to fully automated to best deal with and react to weather conditions.

Our cassette systems retract into a protective casing, housing the fabric when it’s not in use. With over 200 UV stable fabric options, Aspiration Blinds are sure to have you covered when it comes to your dream outdoor awning.

Cleaning An Awning

Prep

Firstly, you will need to prepare your cleaning solution, this need not be anything too advanced, a bucket of mildly soapy, warm water and a soft good sized sponge are the only tools you’ll need… and perhaps a ladder.

You can alternatively buy specialist awning shampoo but should always test the solution on a small patch of the coverings fabric first, never use bleach as this is too abrasive and could ruin the fabric.

Gently Clean The Shade

Ascend the ladder (while it is safely held in position by someone else) then gently wipe and clean any grime, dirt, staines, mildew or filth off the fabric, frame and cassette head box.

For any particularly stubborn marks don’t be afraid to put in a bit of elbow grease, albeit in a controlled manner so as not to compromise the fabric or its functionality.

A power washer, if placed on a mild setting could be used to efficiently and quickly rinse off any soap or dirt residue, but be careful again not to damage the awning itself.

Allow Time To Dry

Once the cleaning phase is complete, it’s vital to let the awning dry out naturally so as not to trap moisture which can lead to further fabric damage, especially before retracting the cover back into the cassette storage header (if one is indeed attached).

It’s best to carry out the cleaning of an awning on a temperate day with a light breeze to allow for optimum drying efficiency.

Add Further Protection

Once the awning is completely dry, you can add an extra layer of protection by spraying the fabric with a waterproof sealant to bolster rain resistance or a UV barrier spray to prevent colour fading. It may be worth noting sealants or sprays should only be used if compatible with your awnings fabric and may affect warranties in some cases.
